Tasmania is Australia's only island State. It is separated from mainland Australia by the Bass Straits and is 240 km south of the mainland. In terms of size only the Northern Territory has a smaller population with nearly half of Tasmania's 500,000 inhabitants based in and around the capital Hobart. Tasmania is known as the natural state and local tourism is built around this proposition with operators offering a range of eco tours, bush walks and natural experiences. Over one third of the State is national parks or heritage sites. The climate here is cooler than the rest of Australia with four distinct seasons. Summer tempratures hover around the low twenties with winter temperatures lucky to hit twelve degrees during the day. One of the more unique locals is the Tasmanian Devil, although sadly the Tasmanian Tiger became extinct in the 1930's. Hobart
State capital Hobart is located in the South East of Tasmania on the Derwent River. The city is built around a stunning harbour and the local cafes and restaurants offer a beautiful selection of local fish. This area is perfect for a stroll and Hobart can be easily experienced by walking through the CBD and down to the Harbour. This area and Salamanca Place reflect the historical side of Hobart and many of the orginal warehouses and factories have been renovated to create a trendy waterfront setting. Within a short drive of Hobart you will find historic Port Arthur and a number of local wineries.
Launceston
Launceston is Tasmania's second city and is located in the North of the State. It is one of the oldest cities in Australia and reflects the more historic side of this beautiful country. The small CBD allows you explore this city with ease and visitors often lean towards to the renewed waterways of the Seaport. Launceston is also known as the gateway to the Tamar Valley, a stunning areas of local wineries. It is also the location to visit Cataract Gorge and various national parks such as Ben Lomond from.
